Bacchia - May 2007
Bacchia (her name means "survivor") had had severe bleeding after her baby was born at home. Her local village health volunteer was called, who brought her to LAMB. Bacchia collapsed near the gate and was rushed into the labour room. She had no signs of life. Our Bengali nurse-midwives immediately began treatment - she had life support, saline and blood while the doctor rushed the 5 minutes to the hospital. Bacchia started breathing, her heart was beating strongly again and blood pressure was restored. After 6 units of blood, removal of the placenta, antibiotics and acute kidney failure due to severe shock, she went home healthy, to care for her baby and family.
Bimola is the village health volunteer (VHV) in Bacchia's village. Because of training from LAMB she was able to assess Bacchia's situation immediately, and she not only got transport organised but also demanded that members of Bacchia's family came to donate blood. Bacchia owes her life to Bimola as much as to anyone.
