Village Healthcare Volunteers - August 2008

Last year Golapi was chosen to be trained for a fortnight at LAMB to become a VHV, building on her own experience as a mother of four.

Many VHVs have little formal education, but their work does not involve much writing, rather telling her neighbours for example where they can get their babies immunised, or why they should have family planning.
The government is meant to provide these services and VHVs have been known to go to government workers' houses and demand their ‘clients’ be seen!

If there are any pregnant ladies in her village Golapi will take them to antenatal classes, and if someone is ill she can advise them where they can go.

Every fortnight she meets in the health centre, 4km away, with other VHVs for more training and encouragement from LAMB staff. Any new births or problems are discussed.

As a volunteer Golapi receives only a token monthly payment but she has gained respect from her community and occaisionally will receive, for example, a chicken, from her neighbours as thanks for her help.
